Am I a Good Parent? My Honest Struggle

Hey there, fellow parents! Let’s get real for a second. How many times have you asked yourself, “Am I a good parent?” I know I have – countless times! As a parent, it’s natural to have doubts and worries about our parenting skills. We want the best for our kids, and it’s easy to get caught up in the fear of not being good enough.
First of all, let’s be honest – there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. What makes a good parent is different for everyone. It depends on your values, your child’s personality, and a whole bunch of other factors.

The Pressure to Be Perfect

We’re constantly bombarded with images of perfect parents on social media, and it’s easy to feel like we’re not measuring up. But here’s the thing: those perfect parents don’t exist! Every parent has their own struggles, doubts, and fears. Even me!

My Signs of Being a Good Parent (Mostly!)

So, how do I know if I’m a good parent? Well, here are a few signs that give me hope:

  1. I show up: I’m present in my child’s life, and I make an effort to attend important events and milestones. I make myself available whenever they are having hard time in regulating their emotions
  2. I listen: I take the time to listen to my child, even when they’re not making sense (which, let’s be real, is often!). Because kids usually think and speak at the same time, so you are developing their cognitive skills by actively listening to them.
  3. I apologize: I’m willing to say sorry when I’ve made a mistake, and I use it as an opportunity to teach my child about accountability. We make mistakes, we learn and we grow together.
  4. I prioritize quality time: I make time for activities and hobbies that bring us joy and closer together. Playing Checkers and UNO with kids are some of our all time favourite Sunday morning games. We love making Legos together.

Breaking the Cycle of Self-Doubt
So, how can we break the cycle of self-doubt and become more confident parents? Here are a few things that work for me:

1. Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself, and remind yourself that it’s okay to make mistakes.
2. Focus on progress, not perfection: Celebrate your small wins, and don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned.
3. Seek support: Connect with other parents, join a parenting group, or seek out a therapist who can offer you guidance and support.

You’re Not Alone!
So, the next time you’re wondering if you’re a good parent, remember that you’re not alone. We’re all in this together, struggling to figure things out as we go. And that’s okay!
